Birthday Nipples!

My 39th birthday was certainly unlike any other I have ever had. Brian and I left our kids with our nanny and my mom to tag team and we went to Maryland. We took the train from Providence to Maryland on July 27th. It took about 5.5 hours to get there; the Acela was nice. Quiet. Clean. Relaxing with no children!

When we arrived, we took an Uber to our hotel and checked in and dropped off our stuff and then took an Uber to dinner. We ate some yummy food and then went back to the hotel to sleep. Next day was my birthday and “nipple” day! We slept in, which was lovely! We never get to sleep in with two kids and two pets. We had a delicious brunch at this place called Eggspectation. We had some time to kill after that because my tattoo appointment wasn’t until 2 PM. We found a nail place nearby and got pedicures. And then we took an Uber to Little Vinnie’s Tattoos. Vinnie Myers is very well known in the tattoo world for doing 3D areola tattooing. Breast cancer patients from all over the world travel to see him for the finishing touches of their reconstruction journey. It was certainly not the cheapest option for me as the tattoos were $800 and we had to travel to Maryland and back. But for me it was worth paying a lot of money for perfection. I was a bit nervous but really had no reason at all to be. It was a bit awkward taking off my top in front of my husband and some tattoo dude I had just met but he was so professional and put me at ease. Since my mastectomy I no longer have feeling in my chest. I still was scared it was going to hurt. I have lots of other tattoos and HATE the feel of them. So it was to my pleasant surprise that when I heard the tattoo gun buzzing, I had to look down to see that he had already started. I felt nothing! No pain and it was over in about 15 minutes.

A few people have asked me questions regarding how he choose color and shape. He put these little silicone circles on my chest to see how the size looked. When I agreed the size was good, he outlined them in pink sharpie and then removed them. I actually had a small piece of my natural areola left behind from surgery so he could see what color I had before. I am guessing he just matched to that as best as he could. He didn’t look at any pre surgery pics although I had them available on my phone to show him if he asked. The whole situation was so weird. We were in and out of the shop in an hour. And the result is FANTASTIC. I am not going to post a pic on here but if you know me in real life and are female (or even if I don’t know you in real life)….. just ask for a pic. I am happy to share! We headed to the airport after that to try and switch our flight to an earlier one but it was $381 each to switch so we just decided to chill at the airport for 5 hours. I finished my book. We ate dinner at this little diner and enjoyed a bit more kid free time. Our flight was late leaving so we got in later than planned. Overall, it was a weird but great birthday! I can still go braless but at least it looks like I have nips again!

Love and foobies,

Allison
